I'm having abit of an issue with my front 105 Shifter, once removed from the bike it shifts fine all day long but with the cable in the shifter and it will pull the cable through fine but if there is significant tension in the cable it will fail to release until tension is released from the cable by un doing it from the front derailer.

Any idea what the problem would be or would I be best to get a new shifter?

Thanks

Maybe the ratchet pawls are a bit sticky under load.

Try blasting a bit of WD40 through it to clean it out, then apply some light oil.

Cheers will give this a go, and if this doesn't solve it looks like it will be new shifter time I guess as they seem to have a tendency to stuff up.

There was an issue with the Shimano 105 ST-5600 left hand shifters, it will depend on how old yours is, and which batch it came from, but it may be possible that it is suffering (or about to suffer) from that problem.

It usually allows you to shift up, but the down shift lever would move but not make the shift.

Try blasting it with WD40, but if that doesn't work, I would speak to your LBS as it may still be under warranty, due to it being a common issue.

If it is terminal, and not covered under warranty, I have got a shifter assembly for a left hand 105 shifter (just the shifting unit, lever etc, not the main body) that I bought for a shifter that I had break before finding out it was a common issue and getting it replaced under warranty, that I would be willing to sell cheap.

I spoke to Madisons the Shimano distributor and even though I can't remember the exact date I brought it they are willing to swap it out for a newer version of the 5600 which is very nice of them I think.

Glad you managed to get it sorted :) Madison have been very helpful all of the times I have dealt with them.
  • Hey Road Race Dave,

I know that is a two year old post but I have a similar problem with a 105 model 5600 brifter.
If you keep bike like me and you still have it around please let me know.
I need a triple left brifter.

    Thanks,
