Love the look of the Crank Brothers Iodine and Mavic Crossmax wheelsets, but not the price! Is it possible to do a better value custom build with similar 24 spoke, AM-type spec? No idea where to start with custom wheel builds...

24 hole rims and hubs are not that common after market - and the spoke patterns that will give the best build with them probably won't match the look you are after.0

Side point but I saw a pair of Roval wheels this weekend.
The front wheel looked amazing, radial spokes on the right with 2 cross on the left.
very very cool.
I always thought that radial spokes would be destroyed by disk brakes (bike came with 203mm), but I guess the other side restricts rotation.
I kinda want to build a set now too!Why would I care about 150g of bike weight, I just ate 400g of cookies while reading this?0 -
WIth radial it depends on the side of the wheel as you summised. On non disc wheels can work on both sides of the front, and non driveside at the rear. With disc wheels, non disc side at the front, and not on the rear at all. Generally speaking!
I stil think for most applications 3x 28/32/36 will do most people depending on your weight.0 -
The radial/2x pattern has some irritating disadvantages too, because there's twice as many disc side spokes, truing them can be a real PITA. Combined with straight pull spokes...
I had some Controle SLs, and they were perfectly alright wheels, but frankly they were totally trashed after 2 seasons. I could have handbuilt more reliable and lighter wheels for less money. If they'd not come on a bike I'd have been annoyed.0 -

Thanks anyway - guess I stick with current wheels or get saving!!0 -
What exactly are you trying to achieve?
You can build stronger/lighter/cheaper than Iodines/Crossmax, 24 spokes isn't key to their performance. They won't look as flash admittedly, but I'd far far far sooner have some decent hand built wheels than factory ones.0 -
Build some very light 32 spoke wheels, far easier to live with.0
