As I sat on my a*se feeling sorry for myself yesterday (nursing a hangover) I should say "Yes, I was out this morning and I will be out again this evening".

But.................. I'll be honest, it's blowing a gale down here too, and I'll be fooked if I'm risking being blown alover the road, with the way people drive around Newbury !!!

Shan't be riding today as I'm feeling a bit sore having took an involuntary dismount on Saturday night. Viscious gust of wind took my front wheel (plus mudguard), I overcorrected the sudden alteratrion in direction and took a bit of a tumble. Bad combination of high speed, (going downhill0 , strong wind and a few pints of falling off water. Went for an easy ride yesterday but could do with a rest now.

After fighting to stay on the correct part of the road the past few days, going to give it a miss. Too many close shaves.

I cycled to work this morning at a 45degree angle to the road it felt. Made it in one piece, but going home may suck! Although i'm hoping the wind has calmed...a bit, although I live at the top of a large hill so i doubt it.

Did the Wheels 100 yesterday and the wind made the 80-90 mile bit bloody tough (particularly after I dropped off our small group of 4 to take a quick breather whilst attending to an urgent call of nature). No way could I catch back up for a wheel to grab. Ended up in the granny ring on the flat only managing 10mph. God it was tough (have I mentioned the wind?). Last 10 was a breeze though, as in a breeze from behind, marvelous. Same effort, big ring, 24mph.

Wanted to do a recovery ride later today but will just do a turbo session instead as I cannot face going out :(

Was going to go for a ride this afternoon, but the trees out back are all over the place at times so I may wimp out. The worst thing is, at times it's calm as you like and then all of a sudden it's gale force. It's the unpredictability as well as the strength of the gusts which makes it a bit risky. Might change my mind after a cuppa! Decisions decisions.

I generally give it a miss when the wind is more than about 25mph. Firstly it's just not much fun and secondly it's bloody dangrous. My commute home involves a short section of fast dual carriageway which I have to ride across both lanes to make a right turn, cars and lorries pass so close and so quickly that just getting blown a foot off course by a gust could be the end of me.

I was lucky in that it was a proper headwind - I know that sounds odd but I really don't like crosswinds, and I'm hoping for a tailwind tonight*

I remember cresting Arthurs Pass in NZ from the Christchurch side thinking that I would have a lovely downhill all the way to the west coast...unfortunatelly the wind was so strong that I had to pedal the almost the whole way down to keep going!

i came on this forum to see if there is any discussion on this!

here on the fylde coast its lovely and sunny and bright - but blowing an absolute gale!

metoffice says 41mph winds with 55-65mph gusts! - too much for cycling i think, although I am itching to try!

someone summed it up earlier - 1) it isn't fun and 2) it's too dangerous!

Fear has kept me rooted to the armchair looking at objects flying past my window. If only I had a house in the south of France.
Why tidy the house when you can clean your bike?

I'm testing a Van Nicholas Chinook (ironically) at the moment for a forthcoming review. Trouble is, it's been fitted with carbon aero wheels, with the result that I need forearms like Popeye to keep it going in a straight line. Hopefully less breezy tomorrow.

Reports of 100mph gusts here

There are piles of green leaves in corners and braches flying up the street. It's a bit mental.

Well... I got changed, opened the garage door and......

Did 30 mins on the turbo!!

(and 30 mins weight training, I have a little "gym" in the garage )

Never had to use the turbo in may before - it was red hot in the garage! - but I wasn't going out in that!

In answer to your question and to use that good old quaint Yorkshire phrase, "am I ballacks".

TT tonight, legs are knacked from Friday/yesterday, blowing a gale, chance of a downpour, can't be ar5ed, usual excuses....am i going?, no :)

Yes did 25 miles this afternoon in mid Wales, winds 20- 25 mph and gusting much more...sailed out for 10 miles on A roads then picked my way back on country lanes sheltering by hedges :) but would have prefered the April sunny weather.

Went out yesterday evening and that was enough for me. On one downhill section I normally hit 27mph, last night I managed....wait for it.... 8.19 mph. A gust blew me so hard 15 seconds after I looked at the computer, I got frightened and stopped, finishing that section off on the path.

Even with a tail wind it was dangerous. I started to hit potholes that I would normally miss at the much lower normal speed.

Resting today, but if windy tomorrow it's the Turbo for 45minutes.

I was brave and ventured out though the wind wasn't out much in Bristol though I do suspect the group I met might have found the wind as they were intending to cross the Severn Bridge  If they use the northern side then they may be better off.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

Very glad I wore my helmet - loads of branches and stuff flying around. No problems with the headwind at all, though, knew I should have gone on my bike

I had a charity bike ride planned for today, 20 miles from Criccieth (sea level) to the base of Snowdon, then up the mountain and back home again. We nearly bottled it due to high winds but then we thought fu(k it, it would be too easy if it wasn't for the bad weather.

  • Went out on the road bike yesterday evening (Kendal and Staveley area) and it was very calm.

What a difference a day makes.

Blowing a bit of a gale to today. Quite a few branches down, a tree had blown over a minutes walk from my house and blocked the road.

So..... thought it would be a good day for my new cross bike (Genesis Croix de Fer). Had a lovely ride with a friend and his dog, sheltered by hedges and walls most of the way, until we got on the tops above Kentmere where it was a bit windy. No problems other than failing to unclip quickly enough in a bog and getting a bit wet, but that was my poor riding skill rather than the wind.

Compared to being on top of Buachaille Etive Mor or Helvellyn in a howling gale it was like a walk in the park.
