New drive train advice

I have a 2004 Marin East Peak which is now starting to show it's age. I am looking to replace everything apart from the frame.
I want to start with the drive train and get a new crankset, cassette, front/rear derailleur, chain and shifters.
I have been riding a while but not really worked on my bike before so I don't know if i'd need to change the rear hub or not too?
I have been looking at Shimano XT stuff, as XTR is out of my budget. The bike isn't used for anything too serious at the moment but it'll be going to Coed-y-Brenin in a few weeks as I start to take up MTB more seriously.
Thanks for any suggestions and help.

Some of the German sites were doing good deals on XT groupsets recently, can't remember the names of the sites I'm afraid but I'm sure they will come up with the use of google.
You ojnly need to change the rear hub if it isn't working well, even then it might be serviceable.XC: Giant Anthem X
Fun: Yeti SB66
Road: Litespeed C1, Cannondale Supersix Evo, Cervelo R5

SLX is deffinatly the best value for money. Identical performance to XT but a bit heavier however its about twice as strong.
On CRC the SLX chainset is about £50 cheaper than XT and the rear mech is nearly £20 cheaper.0 -
I bought an SLX double and bash chainset from CRC last month.. its a work of art compared to the Truvativ 5D crap it replaced!
Brilliant value at around £100...0 -
sell the marin
much cheaper to buy a new bike rather than to "replace everything apart from the frame"0 -

Some very good offers on full groupsets. Or mix and match - worth getting the XT shifters over SLX.0

Always mid-range for me.
Top of the range is often just mid-range lightened but also losing some durability at the same time.
Although, low end branded stuff can be fine since it turns up on a lot of bikes and it wouldn't get selected if it was total rubbish.0 -
SLX for me. I got a great deal on a full set up inc brakes from www.bike24.deGenesis Croix de Fer - my new commuting mount
Saracen Hytrail - the workhorse - now pensioned off
Kinetic-One FK1 roadie - the fast one - hairy legs though!
Cannondale Jekyll Lefty MTB - the muddy one which keeps tipping me into gorse bushes!0
