front mech snags

Hi guys,
I'm rebuilding a kona cindercone as a project and having real problems with front mech set up. To clarify, the XT mech i'm trying to use is a 34.9 clamp I assumed that all I needed to do was pack it out to suit the seat tube size of the Kona - 28.6. The mech model number is M751 and is marked as chainstay angle 66-69 degrees.
Is there something obvious i'm missing or do I need to purchase another mech? any advice very gratefully received !
thanks guys, the problem is purely alignment, i'm guessing that if this model is not multi fit then I will not achieve the correct angles?

I would get one that fits, or get the correct reducers. But you don't say what problems you are having, and as my ESP is weak...I don't do smileys.

the M751 was not multi fit."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."
