    short answer - it depends.

How flat is your commute? Do you want to use the bike for anything else?

I do 12 miles each way on a single speed road bike and used to do it on a single speed hybrid. Mostly it is fine but there are times when the head wind is strong or I am just feeling a bit worn out and wish I had some gears so I could take it easy.

Want something fairly quick, but not on racing tyres due to the quailty of the roads. Live in the vale of york.

What about a CX? Personally, I run on Highland B-roads and worse on a carbon road bike with skinny Gatorskins on carbon wheels. Your roads must be pretty shocking.

    "What car do I buy", :!: :!: :!:

First question should be "I have £X to spend what bike would you suggest".

My hybrid XC £1500, can't beat chosing all the components, though I have just fitted Deore XT cranset to my other bike they appears as good as SLX's.

Also everyone has ther own opinion. Bikes like cars are a personal choice, I would only ride this style on/off road. All I have to do is change the tyres.

Throught a grand would get me up and running for a bike.

    Throught about a cyclocross bike?
  • I would go for something like this...

900 quid will leave you 100 quid out of your grand for mudguards and a rack (if you want them)

If you do go for a cyclocross bike I would go for one with disk brakes. They changed the rules in CX last year, before which you only got Cantilever brakes on CX bikes.

I've got a 2010 Kona Jake the Snake... great bike but the brakes are rubbish... Canti brakes are never great.

Yup - something like the Boardman CX looks ideal if you don't want to go for a roadie

Is it all on-road or any off road stuff?

If its all road, then get a road bike or a hybrid IMHO!
