North coast of scotland mini tour, train advice needed!

Ok, got four days, me and a mate are doing a little tour, lairg to the west coast then across the top and back down to Helmsdale.
Thing is, there are no bike spaces available to book on the way up!
Got spaces on the way down.
Anyone got any experiences of how accommodating the guards are to bikes?
Considering trying to bag it up with the wheels off as well to take on as hand luggage.
