Are Chris king R45 hubs worthy of the initial investment? I ideally want a fit and forget set but are able to be serviced easily.

Mig/Mags seem nice but to me seem too fragile.

How many KM's would you typically get between services??

Some people have had issues with reliability on the rear, and needing a lot of tlc.

If you want pretty colours and very high reliability backed up with great customer support then I'd buy some hope hubs. Not the lightest but very very good.

    Disagree with the above.

Cracking warranty and easy to maintain. Once a year service I'd say if run all year round.

I ran CK on my MTB for years (7) with a once a year service carried out at Bromley Bike Co (importers of Chris King)

Gazza - I have heard of (and seen first hand) a problem with the rear Chris King hub going "freewheel" and not engaging.

    They are pretty though.

Tune hubs have a bad reputation for almost everything except for being light. Definitely not fit and forget.

The King hubs certainly don't appear to have the rep of their headsets. I dunno if it's the case with all of them but there are some video's of the rear making a horrible whurring noise. Not just a click click click but a proper racket. Could be an isolated case though.

Surely the like of Campag Record, Shim. DA and DT 240s are safe bets.

Which is 7 more services than the hopes would have needed. All of my sets have simply been fit new bearings every 18months-2 years, takes 20mins...

Sorry should have made it clearer I chose to have them serviced as they were an investment.

Can't comment on CK but I can second ride_whenever on the Hopes. Solid, easily servicable, good value - perfect for a fit and forget wheelset!
