As a new rider (2 months) I have lurked around this forum and aquired alot of really useful info and have decided to take the plunge, say hello, and post on the forum.
As I said I am still new to this but have got up to about 15 miles a couple of times a week - work, wife and kids permitting! - and I am about to buy some more serious clothing. I have been riding up to now in my Mtb shorts and tops but am starting to realise that all you wise people on here are correct about the level of comfort.
So, has anyone got any advice on what my level of rider would need? My initial thoughts are bib shorts, couple of jerseys and maybe arm warmers for our lovely UK summers.

I am currently using my Mtb shoes clipped into M540 pedals on my new Px Pro Carbon. I also really like the Garmin Cervelo team jersey but I am not sure I am at a suitable level to carry it off.

Us newbies really do appreciate the time you guys take to help us get going.

  • Comfort is everything. Your 15 miles will soon turn into 30, then 50 and so on. So ditch the MtB shorts for some fetching lycra. If you're after some excellent bibshorts at a great price, go for Wiggle's own Dhb brand. The reviews speak for themselves. I always carry a gilet for those early morning rides. Endura do a great one for less than £30. Arm warmers and gloves are a no brainer. Good wicking base layers are a must too.
There's no need to spend big. The average cyclist won't notice the difference. Good luck!

Can I refine this to say that the average rider won't notice UNTIL he's tried something better. I count myself as an average rider but made the mistake of trying Assos bibs after being happy with dhb to see what all the fuss was about. Going back is tough.

My advice is "buy once" - don't cut corners as it works out more expensive in the end: "Buy cheap - buy twice"
