As above, was thinking of full XT chainset but SRAM X9 are better rated in WMB... Bike is an Orange 5 and used for technical XC with a view to competing in Megavalanche in 2012 8)

I opted for the FSA Gravity MegaExo dual crank set. Comes with an external BB which I prefer for ease of maintenance and replacement (as I have the tools)
It's a fairly cost effective and light setup
It comes with a bashring, but I went for the Blackspire Dewlie guide/bashring combo

I run a saint bash ring with a bb fit double chainguide in my xtr chainset (works fine with xt too) litterally cant fault it and it will only cost about £35 for the whole setup

Thanks for replies, will be an entirely new chainset and looking at going 10 speed. Budget allows for everything to be XT so any similarly priced alternative ideas welcome.

ok just to check XT 10spd front crankset and lose the big ring and add a bash?

as that is just about your only option.

Don't bother getting any crankset that isn't Shimano. End of.

Or go for SLX instead of XT and buy Missnotax dinner.

:D Miss Notax thinks I should just keep the SLX cranks fitted to the bike, but I am keen to try a proper 10 speed double set up (ie not just remove my big ring and fit a bash) apparently I'll only lose 2 gears compared to a triple set up due to all the cross over ratios on a triple...

Well if i was going to buy some cranks as part of a 10spd set up I would not be buying a triple and losing the big ring and fitting a bash. I would go for the 2X10 and the big cassette.

    This.

Once you pioneers have ironed out all the little 10sp gremlins I'll be having a dabble with some SRAM 2x10 stuff. So I guess I'd have to recommend you go for that one, even though I have no real life experience of it
