If I'm recording the GPS tracks for route I'm cycling on a standard Garmin Etrex (the old yellow one) and I stop at a cafe etc will that affect the average speed listen when loaded into a mapping program e.g. Google Earth or does it only adjust the average speed for when I am actually moving?

Just need to know whether to turn the device off at stops or not.

Most analysis tools will not count stopped time in averages.

Most analysis software will show both an overall average and a moving average.
    More problems but still living....

    Hi.
Iv'e got the basic Garmin etrex, and the average speed as indicated in the unit is calculated from moving time only (Good thing really.).

If you want the overall average you can download the track into Memory Map and right click on it & select properties. This shows the overall average.
