Going to stay in Briancon for a week during the Tour and have a few days at the start of the week to do some climbs before the race arrives. Having done most of the big climbs in the area, Lautaret, Izoard, etc, looking for something a bit more off the beaten track. Any suggestions?

Colle del Finestre is just across the border in Italy. It is a beast of a climb (from the north)and the last 5 miles or so are unpaved (but rideable... the Giro d'Italia will go there next week).

The Col de Granon is absolutely superb and starts just outside of town. It is one-sided but very much worth the effort.

Ahh, good one, never thought of the Finestre! And I did see the Granon somewhere else, like the idea of starting out from Briancon. Cheers!
