I am thinking about autumn and winter...
My Specialised Allez 2010 has 700 x 23's plus mudguards with miniscule clearance. I don't think it will be too good as the weather turns
I have an old hybrid Raleigh which I could use when the mud on the country roads becomes too cloggy, and the roads too slippery.

So, which tryes for my hybrid , which has 700 x 35 ?
The commute is onr easonable roads for 18 of the 20 miles - but the other 2 miles are muddy and crumbly very "farmyardy"

Any advice greatlfully received.

Cheers

John

I'd go for Schwalbe Marathons or Marathon Plus. You won't get any punctures unless you actively seek out glass.

They're not the lightest but they do roll well. Got a bit of tread for where it gets super muddy as well. They're great on wet towpaths for example.

I run 700 x 28 Marathons on my commute but I've also used them on cycle tracks, paths etc I ran these all through the winter including the snow without any problems. Grip is fine and I can't remember last time I had a puncture using these tyres

I have 700x47c Continental City Contacts, no punctures and good speed and lighter than the Maraton Plus. You'd want the 700x37cs.

I used 32mm Mararthon plus and they are great on my commute which, for the first four miles, is through single laned farm track. I wouldnt think you would need to go bigger than 32mm.

...Marathon Plus for me. I ride lanes, tracks and cycle lanes...
...all the way...'til the wheels fall off and burn...

700x28 marathons for me, commute on road, gravel / cinder path and a quick sprint on some hardpack mud if its dry. Have had one p*** when a big sliver of glass got wedged in the tread and worked it's way through the casing. other than that, quite reliable tyres.

Can be tough to lever on and off, when you're fitting them a bit of soap on the inside of the bead helps.

the reflective sidewall strip is pretty cool as well - just keep it clean.

    40-622 Marathon Cross for me.

It's quite light for the width (similar to 32-622 Marathon) & has quite a bendy carcass with soft-ish rubber that seems to grip well, wet or dry.

I wouldn't use Marathon Plus unless you know that you have a bad puncture problen (glass-strewn urban commute), or getting the back wheel out & in again is a real pain (hub gears). The tyres are so thick & heavy that that tyre pressure seems to make little or no difference to grip - I think the contact pressure doesn't change much with the tyre pressure, because of the thick, heavy carcass. Doesn't seem to grip too well at the best of times.

We use M-cross - on 19mm rims - at ~100psi for dry smooth roads, or ~35psi in snow & ice. Or anywhere inbetween.

In mud, the knobbly bits on the sides are not going to be as good as an MTB mud tyre, but they grip a lot better than a smooth treaded tyre.

I usually commute on 28mm Stelvio slicks, but I'm not really sure I'm any quicker on them than on the Marathon Cross.

28mm marathons on my tourer. Don't go any wider - it's not necessary.
