HI

I am in need of replacing my 32t chain ring on my single speed (adapted) mountain bike as some of the teeth have snapped off.

I currently run an 8 speed system

I have been looking on the internet for a replacement chain ring (104 CBD / 4 arm) but have found some that say inner or outer on them.

Some also say that you can turn them over and get another life span from them. How is this possible if the teeth are worn down?

Please could someone advise what the above means as I only want to run the 1 32t chain ring up front?

Many Thanks

inner and outer refers to the position where it mounts. as the shoulders are different.

the teeth only wear on one side.

buy a ring with the correct BCD and you will be fine.

well nothing that can not be fixed with a files.

but as many crank makes change the size of the shoulders and even the location it can be guess work which is actually correct.

When i `singlespeeded` mine i fitted a Blackspire ring for the front of mine.

Works a treat fro me ..check out CRC for more detail on sizes etc

  • I got a Gebhardt one from velosolo for my 1x9 and for the 1x7 I just got a deore middle from CRC. Both are fine I reckon the deore will outlast the other as it's alloy(but then reversible?)
The chainlines are similar but the deore comes off(it's now a 2x9, front mech stops this) and the Gebhardt never does. I've not compared teeth profile maybe the G is more toothy as it's not meant for changing at the front, no pins to get it up to the outer if you have one. :?

can i use a normal 32t ring or does it have to be single speed specific?

JAMLCFC, do you know whether yours is a inner or outer?

sure mine is a veloce which is a stand alone ring...ie its supposed to be used on its own

I did use just the middle ring from my triple set to start with just to see what my preferred gear ration would be.

You may need to get new chain ring bolts or spacers so add those to the order as well.
