Amazing what you can get second-hand. If it's all mountain you are after then I would think that Orange 5, Meta 5, Spesh Pitch, Santa Cruz Heckler are good for starters. The Orange is British and designed for British conditions so always a good reason to buy one. I have a Commencal Meta 5 (2007) and have upgraded it recently with new forks and QR15 and Maxle light axles and lighter, tougher wheels and it will take on more than I can handle, but my brother has a Pitch built up big and that will go down some awesome stuff.Commencal Meta 5.5.1

If you're buying second hand full suss, I'd take a look at Konas like the Coilers/Coilairs and Dawgs. Not because they are particularly amazing bikes, but because they are very robust. A lot of bike hire shops in the Alps and Rocky Mountains use either Kona or Specialized for their hire fleet because they are tough and low maintenance.I had to beat them to death with their own shoes...

What do you mean by "all mountain"? That nicely dreamed up marketing bracket covers a lot of possibilities.0

Have a look for a 2005-2006 Specialized Enduro, they can be found with outstanding spec at your budget, and IMO a much better suspension design than the newer models.
Or look at one of the new 130mm travel Boardmans. http://www.boardmanbikes.com/mtb/fs_team.html Fantastic spec @£1000 and even more importantly, new.And now you know, and knowing is half the battle

If you like going down how about an 09 trek remedy 7 or 8 they had a great spec and fetch about that sort of money on ebay. I ride a spruced up 09 remedy 9 and wouldnt be parted from it.
Bang for buck on components was at its best in 08/09 for exampla a remedy 8 in 09 was about £2000 and had a full XT groupset inc brakes this year its rrp is £2600 and it has a shimano m552 chainset on it (not even a bloody slx).
I think your very wise to go second hand my friendYeti SB66c 20130 -
cheers for the imput guys, some good points to take on board.
when i was reffering to a bike for "all montain" my description would be for Techy/ rocky sections, down hill, drop offs and some nice jumps thrown in, im not all that capable yet (compared to some) but im getting there and at somepoint i will need a bike thats up to it, 160mm travel is what im after, ive got a Cube Reaction with 100mm for my XC and still use it for all the above but it gets a bit bumpy at times, fantastic bike though0
