Word of warning for indoor mechanics

edited May 2011 in The bottom bracket
My 4 year old daughter is having an operation tomorrow under general anaesthetic to remove a single braid of brake cable from her arm.

I built up my TT bike in the conservatory last week. When I trimmed a brake cable, some strands flew off and hid somewhere in a nook or cranny.

She somehow got the piece of wire stuck in her arm and it then worked its way in and beyond reach of tweezers.

:(

If you do mechanicing indoors and you have kids or pets, or even if you don't, please learn from my mistake and don't leave any bits of wire around....

Hope everything goes well my owd and that she soon recovers.

Don't "beat yourself up" over it though, it's just one of those totally unpredictable things 999 times out of a 1,000 tweezers would have got the blighter out. As a parent though you can't help but blame yourself.

I know how you feel, I had the same thing happen to my 2 year old a couple of months ago. i thought I'd swept everything up but a small bit of gear cable still managed to find its way into her foot. Fortunately, after a trip to the doctors, it worked itself out after a few days hobbling around and giving me that 'you dumb b%£$a£d' look!
Seriously though, I hope everything works out well for you and yours.

Amazing that it has made it's way so deep into her body that it needs an operation to get it out! I would have thought it would only get so far into the epidermis and than stop and just come out like a splinter of wood or whatever... Hope she feels better soon...

Thanks very much for the messages. She had the wire out this morning and no problems with the general anaesthetic (which was the worry really) so all well in the end. Still, I'll make sure I'm more careful in the future.....

I blame the parents m'self. Reminds me of that time my toddler son accidentally swallowed a Mich Pro Race 3. Terrible moment, when you suddenly realise that thirty quid's worth of tyre has gone missing.

Good luck with it OP, and like they've said, it's a one in a million. But you'll still beat yourself up over it. It's normal.

I am glad things are back on track for your daughter.

It does not have to be inside for things to go wrong.

I dropped some staples from a staple gun in my garage this morning. I thought I had picked them all up (they split into individual staples on impact) but apparently not.

I have just self stapled my deck shoe to my foot by treading on the one staple I missed!

She has problem's getting dressed. She can't stretch her arm too far, or she ends up in the wrong gear.

Maybe winding some insulating tape around the section of cable you propose to remove may capture any stray strands. I'm not being judgemental, or wise after the event, it's just an idea that has occurred to me.

Best wishes to you and your daughter.
  • Very glad to hear all went well & thanks for the update.
