I'm a bit of a novice when it comes to bike maintenance, but yesterday I stripped my bike down to clean it and I'm having a couple of problems, they are only minor and I'm reluctant to take it to my LBS and I want to learn how to do this myself.

Problem 1:
Have I threaded my chain through the rear mech properly? I've got a feeling I've put it through incorrectly, pics below:

    Problem 2:
I changed my chain a few months back and havent really been on the bike since, so I'm not sure if its the right size or not... rear mech position when on biggest ring for front and back...

    Is this bad?

Looks like the chain is going the wrong side of the metal tab between the two jockey wheels. Its a mistake I've made in the past... always wondered why my rear mech was sooo noisy!

thought so, going to put it on properly now - anyone got any ideas on the 2nd post regarding my rear mech position? is my chain too short?

also my rear brake pads are grinding against the rotor (avid juicy 3's) - I've tried loosening the brake, gripping the pads tightly and then tightening the bolts, doesnt seem to help...

The chain I can't tell by the pics, but you should be able to size it properly by wrapping it around big ring, big sprocket and bypassing the rear mech. It should be taught, and where they meet, add two links.

Avid brakes setup: I have two sets of Avids, always rubbed by setting up the way you mentioned (only slightly). I think the tri-align washers don't help. Where the brakes fine before you disassembled?

I've managed it in the end by really fine positioning manually and slowly nipping up the bolts. mind your fingers though, I have the bloodied fingernails still!

Looks if anything a little too long.

If the derailleur isn't snaking the chain back on itself and rubbing when on small/small, then I would leave it myself.

wicked - i took a link out of the chain and re-routed it and its running like a dream, apart from a small bit of rub against the inside of the front derailleur... ideas? :)
