Can anyone tell me if there are any alternatives to using isopropyl alcohol when servicing a fork?

isopropyl alcohol is very easy to get hold you know?
i "borrowed" mine from a mate who works in a lab, but thats due to me being tight fisted and cant be bothered to pay the £3.99 from amazon ect
alternatives ofc can be degreasers but mild ones are better than hardcore ones as some of them can i hear damage the foam rings and seals on the lower legs, also takes longer to dry compared to isopropyl alcohol which drys in contact with the air so a lot quicker.London2Brighton Challange 100k!

Why look for anything else when IPA is perfect? Plus, anything else you buy will probably be glorified IPA anyway!http://i556.photobucket.com/albums/ss9/ ... lurLT2.jpg

thing is IPA is not really needed for a fork service. Soap[ and water works just as well."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Meths works just as well as IPA and tastes better.Fig rolls: proof that god loves cyclists and that she wants us to do another lap0

Local place that can supply me with IPA is out of stock and not expecting any more for a month or so. Hence looking for alternatives.0

ebay plenty of places selling the 99% industrial stuff. This is the one I buy from quick delivery

+1 for soapy water.
motorbike brake and chain cleaner also works well provided its o ring suitable as some of the cheap stuff is aggressive. but it costs 5 times more than ipa which can be had from ebay for about 5 quid a litre.
I used £shop's version of muck off, which I think in mostly soapy water. But at £1 for a litre including the spray bottle it was probably cheaper than soapy water.
re the link above - I didn't realise you can use ipa for transesterification.0 -
The real advantage of IPA is that it flashes off quickly at room temperature, soapy water works but takes longer to dry afterwards. Also no chance of leaving a residue behind.Uncompromising extremist0
