Excess adrenaline?

I'm prone to setting off too fast in time trials but on my last ride made a conscious effort to set of really steadily. However, after a few hundred metres up the very slight drag that the course starts on I was hyper ventilating. It also used to happen in the first few minutes of a road race. Is it possible that I get too hyped up and this causes the problem? I'm tempted to think it is just that I'm too unfit but it used to happen when I was far fitter. The only other issue I can think of is I'm not warming up at a high enough intensity. I've got my first road race in years in a few weeks and I'm worried that it will happen there, it's not so much of an issue on a TT as I can just back off but if I do that in a road race I'll be dropped before it gets going!

Adrenaline and heart rate are related aren't they? If you're heart's really pumping then that will lead to shallow breathing and, in effect, hyperventilation I would imagine.
I used to need 5 minutes at the beginning of important football matches for my nerves, heart rate, breathing to settle down.
A weird feeling to be out of breath after 5 passes and a throw-in!Ben

I doubt it is fitness,i get that on some rides now and again, hard to put into words but i understand what you mean,it's like your body catching you up and then you settle down after a while,if that makes sense. It's usually tension, maybe some adrenaline and the build up etc to the event.0
