Giant Defy 4 - Upgrade or new bike?

When I started cycling last year I bought a Giant defy 4 (2010 model), which I have been very happy with.
Along the way I have upped my riding from 5 - 7 mile rides, to regular 40 - 50 mile rides, and I have lost 3 stone in weight.
I also now have a hybrid that I use for the 5 mile commute to work.
I know its asked all the time but I will ask again,
Upgrade or buy something else, and will either really make that much difference as I only ride alone for pleasure, so whilst I monitor my average speeds etc, other than the personal pleasure from seeing it improve, it doesn't really matter if a ride takes me 2 hrs or 2hrs and 15 minutes.
I will have about £1k tops to spend and have been thinking about items from simply upgrading to a carbon fork, is it that much better than Chromo?, to a full carbon bike.
The only problem I currently suffer is numb hands, and I have added gel tape etc.
All comments / advice appreciated
Thanks
Alan

IMO carbon = comfier. Carbon forks would be a worthy upgrade.
Don't expect anything to make you faster, unless your are placebo-responsive.0 -
If it were me i would get a new bike and for that money it would be a cayo or ribble. I must be a placebo responsive as i went from an Allez elite to a Van Nic Mistral and i am much faster!0

Thanks for the replies
Interestingly enough the bike that has caught my eye is a 2011 Ribble Sportive Bianchi
Pathetic I know, but I suppose I am looking for moral support in justifying the additional expense!!0 -
Go for it and sell the old bike on ebay - you will get at least half of what you paid for it. I do this all the time!0
