Deda Nero Zero and 3T Mistral Bars -- potentially dangerous

Despite being torqued to BELOW the max rated spec, I've had a Deda Nero Zero face place dent into and crack a 3T Mistral bar, thereby ruining the bar, and leaving it unusable.
If any of you are running this combination, check your bars carefully.

  • It's sensible not to mix brands with bars and stem as sometimes they are a slightly different diameter.

Was not being torqued to the correct spec the reason?
  • no, it was torqued correctly, tightened down correctly..etc..
That's what's under my skin so far, is that I'd done it all right, an checked all the boxes.

I think it's a combination of the faceplate being so extensively milled for weight reduction, and possibly being of too soft of an alloy which allowed this to happen - but whatever the reason, it was always torqued within spec for the bars .. this simply shouldn't have happened.

i think what shutuplegs was getting at is that you stated that you tightened them to less the the recommendation, which could have meant there was a bit of movement of the bar in the stem which is why they dented. That aside it shouldn't really have happened

Deda OS standard is 31.7 whereas 3t is 31.8 - either component only needs to at the extremes of their dimensional tolerance to cause you a problem.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
  • Ozzy :

I'd tightened them to less than max rating of 5.5 on the aerobars. My logic being if 3T says they'll withstand 5.5T max, than 4.5 would be a safe starting point.
The little bit of movement didn't happen right away, it was a month later, there was the tiniest bit of movement in the bars, which then went away as I torqued to 5Nm....still within the max rating for the bar clamping area.

    Very frustrating this..
