hi i live in bangor also. there are around 8-10 lads you can talk to on thursdays at around 9-10pm that meet up in weatherspoons that can give you some pointers. just dont say marin is crap to them even tho it is

Yeh its the mtb club aint it? but its basically all downhillers ive been told.
I go out with my gf and a mate we do the trails mainly rougher than XC but not downhill.

Marin is either amazing or crap i hate the middle section i swear its designed to ruin rims and tyres. final descent is good though.

for just messing about beddgelert forest is ok

Llandegla is another trail centre that's within an hour (and it really shouldn't take an hour and a half to get to CYB from bangor, more like 50 minutes or so).

Not many more waymarked trails though. I think there's some in Beddgelert forest, but I haven't been there in over a decade.

Fo natural stuff though, just go get an OS map, or just start heading up mountains and seeing what you find.

Can't say I was really taken with Penmachno either. Traditional XC slog around fireroads and across bleak country paths, then about 20% of the ride actually on singletrack. The singletrack was fairly good though, but could have done without the rest.

    CYB was far better.

deadkenny, are you freaking kidding me? I don't know of any trail with more singletrack than Penmachno.

Seemed to involve a hell of a lot of forest road climbs to me. Only did one of the loops though and forget which it was now.

Don't get me wrong, there is a fair bit of singletrack, but it's just that I only spent about 20% of the time on it. The rest was tedious climbs on fireroads, and across what I don't consider proper singletrack which is XC paths across moorland.

Are you SURE it was penmachno? Because it seems like about half of it is lovely sinewy singletrack.

Got to agree with Yeeha on this, Penmachno has a very high proportion of singletrack. Loop 2 normally takes me about an hour and probably less than 10 minutes of this is spent on fireroad.

Loop 1 has more fireroad but still far less than CYB the Marin and Llandegla.

Found the track. Looks like it was loop 1 I did. Still swear I spent less time on fireroads at CYB than I did here.

As I said though, it's not the amount of singletrack & fireroads, it's the time spent on it. Okay you could argue that a long fireroad slog is worth it for good singletrack. Yes there's some pretty good singletrack here but having to travel a fair distance to get there and then slog on fireroads for ages, I just felt I'm unlikely to want to go back. Fun having done it, but don't want to do it again. CYB however I could do loads of times.

ok maybe not an hour an a half but a fair drive and im a poor student :P

Penmachno's has very little fire roads in proportion and its over an done with very quickly where as marin's fire roads go on and on and on and on so boring

i was thinking abotu llandegla aswell it looks good on youtube videos

See, I still don't agree with you. It really felt like I was hardle ever OFF singletrck almost the entire way round. And it was lovely, swoopy, twisty stuff all the way, with that amazing dappled light through the dense tree cover. The kind of singletrack tht dreams are made of. And it just went on forever.
Second time I went there, I was expecting less, since I knew the brain plays tricks, but honestly, no. Every time I've been back, I'm always blown away by how much singletrack there is.

    completely agree
my usual trick is i convince myself the uphills are shorter than they are and the single track shorter, but i just love it

do many people on here meet for rides at penmachno?

Just done the Marin on Sunday after a 2 week layoff post-7Stanes trip, and I'm NOT impressed. Between 6 of us, we collected 4 punctures and a bust rear wheel bearing. That place has been left to deteriorate so much over the winter it's heartbreaking compared to it's condition even 2 years ago. It looks as if all the FC maintainance attention's being focused on CYB, while the Marin's singletrack is steadily being washed away. It's such a pity, as I usually hit it after work during the summer months, as it's my local trail. I reckon Penmachno's a better bet from now on! :D

Oh come on, you can't moan about it being rough. Moan about it being old fashioned, sure, or boring, or loads of climbing for very little payoff, or the excessive amount of fireroad, or the stupid uphill stone stairs bit.
But for being rough? It's a mountain bike trail, not a road bike time trial course.

Not so bothered about it being rough Yeeha, just that it's such a pity it's being neglected so much, as compared to CYB. It needs some TLC

CYB has had too much TLC. Have you seen the new sections there? It's turning into just another Llandegla.
    Gutted.
Give me rough, unkempt trails for general riding any day - although I don't mind the odd blast on a Llandegla-esque rollercoaster.
