I bought a bike second hand 5 years ago. I use it regularly, hard to give an average as it gets too hot for long rides in summer here but bout 60 to 70 km per week. There is one LBS here in qatar and it doesnt even look at Campagnola. My bike has 9 speed mirage campy so I resolved to ride the bike till it could ride no more then change over to Shimano. Thing is in the last 5 years I have never have a gear slip and have never changed anything.

Sorry for the long pstory but why is my chain lasting so long?

maybe the dry hot weather in the absense of crap.

Still I reckon I have done about 15 000 km on one chain and I don't know how many miles the previous owner did. I'm not complaining, I'm just wandering if we are encouraged to change our kit too often.

Have you measured the chain to see how stretched it actually is?

just had a look with a ruler, hasn't stretched much, about 1/16 of an inch if that, maybe I'm not trying hard enough.
