Confirmed. I won't be watching the procession that's left.
Stupid decision to put it in, put it right, then, at the eleventh hour, pull it out.

For that video by Alessandro Gaspari (national champion, mountain bike orienteering) and Marco Vector here is what he said:

"The first part of the roadway, about 3km has not been been compacted, while the second was already finished. You can really gain speed, and with the mountain bike I lost rear wheel traction at least two times. It feels like asphalt but when you use the brakes the bike slips in the corners. There are safety barriers and banners but these really serve mostly to give you an idea where the road ends."

Is it cancelled due to snow or safety? Contador was hoping for snow.

To prove he's a True Champion? Oh no, so as the stage was cancelled. Pah!

I wonder how it must be for people like you always taking the underside, always angry, always pissed off at something or someone, ever the pessimist and cynic, never happy...

Are they sticking in another climb instead of the Crostis or are they going straight to the Zoncolan?

I wonder which route they will now take. Zomegnan says he has a Plan B, and a Plan C and even a Plan D. How very Berlusconisque!

I wonder why the change of plan. The 5-6 riders Zomegnan dealt with about the security measures apparently felt they were enough (although Garzelli sounded hesitant in an interview I saw).
French Eurosport was today reporting that dissatisfaction amongst riders was more based on the criticism Cioni made, which wasn't to do with safety.

Cioni said, roughly translated "Supposing a main contender crashes and damages his bike, but isn't able to be soon serviced by the team car because of the narrowness, then he would effectively lose his chance of overall victory. It wouldn't be fair to lose the Giro because of a mechanical fault and poor service. The riders aren't happy about this."

The inability to service the riders in the event of a mechanical was deemed unacceptable by the UCI folks.

    And that's why it's out.

Oh, is Paris-Roubaix off the calendar next year then? That'll be a shame.

I imagine it is pretty difficult to service a rider when he's fallen off the mountain.

Instead, they have inserted a lump in the shape of a tit. How apt:

That was a good video. Shame it's not in - would have liked to see Nibali going down it. :)

So, could this now be a possible breakaway stage?

So, let me get this straight- the UCI have decided to pull it because a car can't get to a punctured/fallen rider.

Surely they could have worked that one out a couple of months ago.

Whoda thunk so, but cycling seems to do everything at the last minute. I'm sure there is a good reason for this.

Yeah... politics. Wasn't Zomegnan one of the people JV was discussing the breakaway league with? Perhaps a symbolic motion to put one over Z by rewriting the queen stage?

    Lightweights.

I blame David Brailsford and will let them know my thoughts at sign in today. There were no cars on Plan de Corones last year either. When you see the amount of work the locals had gone to for this it's sickening that some overpaid prima donnas in lycra can put it all to waste.

My respect for the Pro peloton just fell through the floor.

So the UCI pulled this after 'concerns from the riders' ... Or maybe the UCI is playing a nice game of divide and conquer ... Blame the riders so the GT owners have reason not to side with them in the new power struggle ... Would have been a canny move by the UCI had this been true ...

Trouble is the sport is currently run by politicers and gladhanders ... But could end up being run by liars and cheats ... Who's a sponsor to shake hands with?

Wonder what they'll get on e-Bay for a tonne of plastic barriers.

I suspect that the riders would have ridden like a bunch of school children sitting their cycling proficiency test, and yes, it did look more suited to mountain biking, but what a shame for all those who put a lot of time and effort into it.

Apparently the teams got offered a reroute, with a few extra smallish climbs in on Monday. They said no, Crostis is fine. Amazingly, the evening before the relevant stage they changed their minds when there is no time for a proper reroute. Poofs. They're just scared of the mega-hard stage.
