'The Reality Disfunction' by Peter F Hamilton
in a far future humans are an interstellar society and the dead find a way to come back to the life posessing the bodies of the living.
It's the start of a trilogy called 'The Night's Dawn Trilogy' and I found all 3 unputdownable.
Also Asimob's robot trilogy starting with Caves Of Steel, very easy reading but very good stories.Whether you're a king or a little street sweeper, sooner or later you'll dance with the reaper.

Anything by the late David Gemmel are always up on my list0

IIf you like crime fiction then anything by Jim Thompson, Jerome Charyn or Elmore Leonard.
Sci Fi - Asimov Foundation series (comes before the Robots series) or anything by Philip K Dick.
I've just finished A Game of Thrones and A Clash of Kings, by RR Martin with the others sat ready to read. They're both quite good.Visit Clacton during the School holidays - it's like a never ending freak show.

Space Captain Smith by Toby Frost
Altered Carbon (and the following 2 books) by Richard Morgan
Crooked Little Vein by Warren Ellis
The Night Angel trilogy by Brent Weeks
Vurt by Jeff Noon0 -
Disc-World series by Terry Pratchett - but read them in order.
Chronicles of Thomas Covanent - Stephen Donaldson.0 -
definitely agree with Altered Carbon and sequels and also the foundation series, don't know when they were written time wise but the foundation series are set after the robot novels.Whether you're a king or a little street sweeper, sooner or later you'll dance with the reaper.

Second the Pratchett recommendation, however if you haven't read any of them already you must have been living under a rock or just not interested.
Any of the books by Neil Gaiman, (particularly Neverwhere) who, as it happens, wrote this saturday's Dr Who. If you're that way inclined.0 -
One Fine Day in the Middle of the Night by Christopher Brookmyre (or anything by him)
+1 for Space Captain Smith seriesAttention all planets of the Solar Federation - We have assumed control.0 -
The Zombie Survival Guide, and World War Z by Max Brooks.
Or Lord of the Flies.. I could read that book over and over.
+1 for Pratchett though, great stuff.0 -
El Capitano wrote:Disc-World series by Terry Pratchett - but read them in order.
Or, "A simple act of violence", by R.J. Ellory. Thoroughly enjoyed that last year.0 -

If you like crime fiction, but also want to get an insight into other cultures then:
the 'Brunetti' novel by Donna Leon ("Death at La Fenice" and many others)
and
the Inspector Montalbano novels by Andrea Camilleri (I'd maybe skip "The Shape of Water" and start with "The Teracotta Dog")
For sheer weirdness try "Secret of the Gorilla Sisters"... (declaration of interest - I know this author, but nevertheless I think it's a good read).... "Reader, I hate you. You are ugly, dull and stupid like a pebble on the beach that once seemed so interesting and bright on the glow of the stting sun. Now you just weigh down the boot of your parents' car along with some 'interesting' shells you found and half a tonne of sand".
I agree with the Stieg Larsson ("Millennium") recommendations. I'd also read "The Time Traveller's Wife" by Audry Niffenegger, "Under the Frog" by Tobor Fischer and "The Underground Man" by Mick Jackson among many others. Finally, if you like hostorical finction try "The Walled Orchard" by Tom Holt.Vitus Sentier VR+ (2018) GT Grade AL 105 (2016)

Kingley Vale and QECP Trail Collective - QECP Trail Building0 -
'A Lime, A String and A Lady' - Mrs S Teeth. of Rhyl. The dissenter is every human being at those moments of his life when he resigns
momentarily from the herd and thinks for himself.0 -
Bonfire of the Vanities by Tom Wolfe and Liar's Poker by Michael Lewis are old but good reads if you can get into 'City' stuff.
If you like Sci-fi then the Red Dwarf books are a good read."I spent most of my money on birds, booze and fast cars: the rest of it I just squandered." [George Best]0 -

I love the Millennium series but im not sure its what the OP is after. For me it took a while to draw me in but when it did I was totally hooked.
If you want something that hooks you straight away try "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" by Hunter S Thompson0 -
Conn Iggulden, both the Ceasar or the Ghengis Khan series' are awesome. Or the Bernard Cornwell series about King Arthur. Mega... Like most of his books, despite the pants Sharpe TV series, the books are a good read. Also Cornwells books about Uhtred, a great set of books. I could go on, but perhaps you could offer a more specific type of book???_____________________________________________
