I think I might have gone a bit mad last night, but I have reserved myself a Carrera Fury 20" 2009 from Halfords. Suntour Epicon, X5/X5, Juicy 3.

I currently own a Kona Blast 2007 with 100mm Dart 3s, Acera/Alivio, Hayes MX5 with Avid FR5s.

I had been pondering a few upgrades for a while and thought that I could probably shift my Blast on fleabay to offset some of the cost of the new Fury.

I intend to do a cheeky test-ride of the Fury before I buy it, but I have never been 100% comfortable on the Kona.. not sure why - something about the handling was a bit too twitchy for me.

AM i actually upgrading, or am I fooling myself with shiny new bits that I don't need?

    I'd say it's an upgrade. Enjoy! :D

  • phew! I'll drop my thoughts on the Fury down when Halfords eventually give me the call to come pick it up.

I love mine! Great bike, comfy, very quick, and tough too.

Is that the one? it is a blimmin good bike might wanna swap out the conti tyres when winter rolls round but they will be good for the rest of summer i would have thought
  • So.. I went to Halfords, but didn't come away with the bike!

The guy was slightly reluctant to let me test-ride the bike, but eventually opened up the warehouse for me to ride around in, which was far from ideal. Having whipped out his allen key set to adjust the seat height (no QR on Furys) I was ready to go.

Having ridden it around a bit, i could hear a ticking noise coming from the wheel. We traced it down to the front brake caliper being set too close to the spokes. Took it back upstairs and got another guy to correct it (the sales "manager"). He half-heartedly showed me what he was doing to correct it.

We went through the compulsory upselling banter and it was time to pay - I inquired about student discount and was told they do it as long as you have your NUS card. I didn't have mine, so he wasn't to be convinced - fair enough.

But that was the last straw for me really. I didn't get a good vibe off the guys, and started to wonder about what else wouldn't have been set-up right, so I walked.

I do have an NUS card and when it got to it, i didnt feel happy about handing over £440 (£40 more than i needed to) for a bike, to guys who hadn't checked it was set up properly.

Seemed like a nice bike, from the 20m of flat floor I had a go on.. perhaps I'll have a change of heart! But, as is so often the case on this forum, the advice I have to give is: Make sure the Halford's staff have set the bike up properly before you leave.
