How to work a garmin edge 800

Ive just bought one of these and it says to plug it in to your computer to download a manua. However when i connect the lead from the garmin to the computer it says something about browsing the internet to find the hardware, then says it cant find it...and then nothing else can be done!

Anyone else have this problem?

Also what are the best places to upload routes from. Ive got the 1:50 OS package.

Im so bad with technology but cant wait to get using this bit of kit!
