That's clearly ripping the name from the popular porno sound guy magazine, Private Ears.

Quite. Though for 99% of us it's the truth.

I've always considered it a pastime, unless you're actually racing

    Interesting topic.
What constitutes a passtime, and what constitutes a sport?

Well you'll have to bear with me here because I'm typing in secret at work. You could do PE as a GCSE at my old school and I seem to remember there being set definitions of 'play' a 'game' and 'sport', though I'm not sure if they're recognised by anyone except the people marking the syllabus or not.

Anyway I can't be bothered looking for them but surely if you're not competing against anyone than you're not taking part in a sport? I could spend 7 hours riding my bike really hard in the Peaks but it's essentially still only a bike ride even if I'm timing myself and pushing really hard.

But if I organised 10 people to turn up, put a start and a finish line somewhere, plotted a course and then everyone set off to see who could do it fastest than I guess that would be a sport?

I sense there's a can of worms here or I'm walking into some kind of trap but nevermind :?

Not at all. That makes sense.
But, if you're training by yourself to do, for example, 100 metre hurdles which is a sport, are you taking part in a passtime, or a sport whilst training?
I think it's all shades of grey, really.

Yeah good point, not sure about that one. I suppose you could argue that you're pursuing a pastime in preparation to participate in a sport but to be fair I'm not sure which side of the fence that falls.

Mountain biking is a funny one really I suppose- in a broad sense I guess many would say that a guy out mountain biking is closer to participating in a sport than a team of darts players playing another team at darts- in the sense that mtbing is pretty physically intense and requires hard physical work as well as technique. Whereas anyone who can drink booze whilst participating in a competition can't really be playing a 'sport' (ie darts), even if they are competing with each other.

Also I''m not sure if say we got ten guys from on here to have a race on Sunday down Cutgate whether that would make it a 'sport'? Possibly it's only a 'sport' with some kind of official sanctioning or participation of a governing body of some kind? So Sunday Leauge football would qualify as even pub teams are at some level, governed by an overseeing organisation of some kind with established rules and regulations.

Like you say, it's shades of grey really and hard to draw a definite line anywhere. Would be interesting to see if there are actually any set definitions. I guess there must be somewhere.

Hmm, according so seslisozluk, the definition of sport is:

"An active diversion requiring physical exertion and competition"

But then it also says that "sport" means:
"A naturally occuring, spontaneous genetic change in a plant"

So, yeah. Shades of grey
