Hi all,

New to road biking and no very little about what is a bargain and what is over priced. I am about to purchase a road bike from Evans as part of Bike to work and have a grand to spend......
I intend to use the bike to keep fit and maybe challenges/competitions so the bike would ideally be quick, comfortable and as light as possible. Is a full carbon frame out of my reach here or are there just as good light ali frames around?.....

As i say, i know sweet FA about frames, gears , tyres etc so any help would be appreciated before i purchase

Cheers.....

I had the same budget last year and went with a Wilier Lavaredo. Can't fault it, fast, light, comfortable and looks great. Upgraded some of the lesser Campag bits and wheelset but it's a great ride and got it for £750 after some bartering. Was tempted with the lure of carbon, but i'm of the opinion that it really doesn't make that great a difference unless you're a very serious/proficient rider. I'd check Ribble aswell - came real close to buying an Ultralite - great bike for the money. Good luck with the purchase

From what's available at Evans I'd choose the Kona Zing Deluxe - 105 and it has the best wheels (£180rrp RS10s), nice looking too.

I'd say best of the rest: Felt F85 - £150 cheaper and lighter than the Z85!
    Cannondale Synapse or CAAD8 105

You could ask nicely if they will 'price match' this carbon Felt Z6 and let you pay an extra £80:

Got to be worth a long shot!

I just bought a Cube Attempt for £999, fitted with 105 pedals, awesome piece of kit for the money. I did look at the Planet X and a few others online. But went to a good LBS, who gave me a proper fitting and he recommended I try the Cube, bought it, hammered it for the past week, fallen off it and couldn't be happier.

Review here, I got the compact though, not the triple.

    They do.

Wiggle also have the Felt F85 for £765 (which Evans may also price match) I think it's enough of a bargain at the rrp of £850!

Either way it gives you a decent amount left to spend on shoes, helmet, clothes etc.

Ok, now i have a good starting point and will now read reviews on each that you have suggested etc, so cheers everyone!

Does anyone know if Evans would buy a bike(from a LBS) that they dont stock and then sell to me so i can take advantage of bike to work? I have test rode the Cube Attempt but Evans dont stock it.....but i know a man who does.....!!

I think with Cube at least they have to be sold by an authorised dealer, so not sure on that one. I had to bite the bullet on mine and pay for it all, cos out bike scheme is only £500 and from Halfords... grrrr
