OK, the stroy so far...

I have a specialized secteur 2010 bike. Its a bottom of the range bike with Shimano 2300 gears and crank etc, all the cheapest bits going. I have noticed the gears starting to clunk, grind, as well as the crank start to knock a bit under pressure. I have had it adjusted a number of times now at 2 different lbs's and its not really any better. The shifters are all moving where they should, but it "appears" to be simply wearing out as it is no where near as smooth as it once was :(

I have only have the bike since jan 30th and have knocked up around 1400 miles on it thus far. Is this mileage about the time the cheaper parts start to wear out?

Not sure what to do so here are a couple of questions:

1) How much mileage should I get out of a cheap gear / crankset?

2) How much mileage would I get out of a more expensive set.

3) Is it worth considering changing the groupset, and if so what to and how much should I be looking to pay and from where.

4) Is it worth considering changing the bike assuming the milage is only going to go up from here on in as initially I was only doing 5 mile runs once or twice a week and yet now seem to be doing 40 to 50 mile runs at least 3 or more times a week?

I hope at least someone has been through this scenario themselves and can save me a lot of time, effort and money by helping me out with a bit of adivce.

Many thanks
Steve

    P.S.

I am not looking for an excuse to upgrade as I actually really like this bike, I know, some may consider that strange, but its done me so proud so far and I like it. I just need something that may be more up to the job, particuarly on hills and the pressure going through the parts. I just don;t know what the right thing to do from here is?

£350 for the 105 (5600) groupset from Merlin would be a nice upgrade, I've probably done c.7000 miles on the same gruppo so far at at 16st it doesn't get an easy life.

OK, time to sound dumb, whats the difference between the 5600 groupset and the 5700 groupset, other than 100

The 5700 has internal routing cables. Ive upgraded from sora to 105 5700 and im very happy with the upgrade and i feel that the shifting is alot smoother.

Anyone got any idea how many miles a Sora groupset should last with medium amounts of hills and pressure? And of course how lonf in comparison would a 5700 groupset last? :?

Well I'm about to remove my sora set that has been working fine for almost 3 years and 10,000 mostly winter miles now. Aside from needing a new chain and cable inners each year its been faultless if a little crude with its thumb shifters sometimes.

(The only reason i'm changing it now is I managed to break one of the shifters by crashing recently, and have been stuck with a lowest gear of 50x23 since....so I fancy using it as an excuse for a newer 10 speed system  )

Are you sure the groupset is worn, or does it just need the cables cleaned and adjusted and possibly has a worn chain? I only ask as I found with lower end shimano kit that they do need the odd tweat to the cable adjusters every few months to keep them smooth..

    my 2 cents anyway

Well in that case I am guessing part of it is just a worn chain, but still not sure what that little clunking from the crank is. I had the entire bike checked out a while and the guy tightend the crank up as he said it was marginally lose and he adjusted all the cables and stops, all was good for a while but it seems to be getting worse with each hill :?

Ideas on a post card to......

Well 'clunking' from the crankset/BB area could be any number of things :?

Could be pedals - my look keos have now started creaking after said mileage and have play in the left pedal :(

Could be a failing or prematurely worn bottom brackett - is there any vertical movement if you hold the frame and crank arm and try to move the crank arm up and down/side to side?

Is the noise deffinately coming from the crankset and not the rear wheel hub? At around 2000 miles I needed the freehub removed and greased as the internals had started to seize and that could sound like a 'clunk' when puttng some effort in (I don't like to use the word power seeing as I don't have much  )

Other than that I'm not sure :?

The pedals were changed about 200 miles ago as I had SPD's put on it. I don't truely believe it's those as they were new and it was doing it before and after that. I have also changed the original AlexRims to Shamino RS20's as I picked a pair up cheap and also put a new SG50 cassette on it at the same time as it meant an easy change of wheels.

The noise (as best I can tell) "seems" to be coming from the BB area, and it kinda creaks too. i can't feel any play in it, though there was at one point before the lbs tightend everything up for me.

So I am at a loss too

I have same as you with around 2000 miles so far since October.
Have changed the chain after 1000 miles as the old one had stretched, and have just changed all the cables for jagwires which make shifting much better.
However I also have the occasional clunk from the BB - have about 1mm of play in the end of the cranks which im assuming is a worn BB. Flushed a bit of GT50 through it which stops the cluck but i guess it needs changing.
