Is a 2.35 Minion DHF 60a 'overtyred' for trail riding?

Quite like the 2.35 High Roller on the front of my Ramones and am looking for more of the same. Not too bothered about rolling resistance providing it grips like the proverbial in a wide range of conditions esp damp rubble, roots and soft loamy stuff.

Just wondered if anybody is using a DHF Minion for semi-aggro trail riding? Any good or should I look at something else? cheers

I run 2.35" single ply high roller onthe rear and 2.5" minion Duel ply on the front.

It's my prefered set up, not to bad pedalling and the grip on the downs <3

Used 2.35 Maxxpro Minion SP front and rear for trail riding. Good grip in a range of conditions and roll well IMO.

Me too, the 2.35 minions seem to come up more like a 2.2 so you might not find them as big as they sound. worked well whenever i've been over cannock dog and monkey trails too

Yup, they're way undersized, old maxxis tyres were measured by a blind man with a bent ruler, on a galloping horse. I'm not that big a fan, if the 2.35 was as big as it's supposed to be then it'd be a good mix of drag, weight and grip but instead it's smaller and less grippy than it should be. But still a good tyre.

Oy Maxxis- Minion DHF and Highroller on new 2.4 carcass RIGHT NOW.

I run suoertacky 2.35 Minnion DHF up front. Not arsed about rolling resistance. I go too slow on up hills bits for taht to matter much anyway! It rolls better than a high roller. I don't exactly hammer it on the way down either but it does what I want it too. Lots more grip than the ignitor on the back. Especially on grass, the ignitor hates wet gras, the minnions had no trouble.

    I'd get one.

I had a 2.35 minion DHF on the front, but didn't like the front end feel at all round cannock. It was in the not so good condition time, and probably had a lot to do with my lack of skills.
its somewhere in the shed now full of spiders.

Cannock's a difficult one in the wet. Is there any tyre that can grip on those pebbles when it's been raining?

have had some success with 2.4 Nics and Advantages it seems the only way to find traction is to put some rubber down. Minions are available in softer compounds and I wondered if they would work in the current 'earthquake' conditions

I'm happy with the grip from the 2.35 maxxpro minions at Cannock in all conditions. Just not on the pebbles when wet!

What in hell's name is "earthquake conditions"?
And what, precisely does "overtyred" mean? Maybe if you could fill us in on that detail, we could succesfully answer your question.

wrt "earthquake conditions", the last time I went cannock (bout 6wk ago) it was like the taliban had been carrying out training exercises on the trail, so don't know if thats what he means ....

What the fukk? Ok then, what the hell do you mean by "taliban carrying out training exercises"?
Those are the two least descriptive ways of describing a trail I've ever heard, and I've read a lot of crap on here. You sound like some teenage girl's shitty attempt at writing a romance novel.

I've found Minions may not suit style of some riders. It's very grippy only if you actually commit to it, I've found for more neutral or less hectic riding RubberQueens - Highrollers - Nevegals of some sort could be better.

I mean, I've spotted no difference in grip of Minion vs Spesh Fast Track OEM (shaity tyre) while riding neutraly without too much attacking trails. Once you spank your bike proper, then Minions make a lot of sense, they may actually scare you with what kind of grip they have!
    What could have been (Video)

I'll choose not put too much stake into someone's opinion who is admittingly terrible though
  • my next tyres will be kenda small blocks.

its drying up now, a minion isn't great in the dry. Draggy and heavy.

Taliban practice digging holes eh? Curious.

Why not just say "there are big holes everywhere"?
And besides, how the fark does that relate to "earthquake conditions"?

Aye, totally agree with that, I feel like mine are great for the, oh, 1% of the time I'm riding at my best and hardest... And the other 99% my Nevegals are better.

I have to agree i too have read some cr@p on here only this time its not you that's talking it Mr Mcgee.
Use your imagination and think about the trails in this hot weather and draw your own conclusions ?

As for the tyres. i,ve just taken off Minions ST front and 60a Rear.
They stick like sh!t to a cat

I,ve just put on High Rollers both 60a and they roll so much faster. They offer far less grip than the Minions under braking, in the corners and are not predictable.
I,ll get used to them and adopt my riding style to suit.

Seems to be a bit of a religious schism this. Seems blimmin obvious to me though, except at really low pressures where they seem much the same.

I run a Minion DHF 60a on the back of my bike tubless on a ZTR Flow rim.
Can't fault it so far, it works well as a tubeless with tough sidewalls and a decent weight. It's a really good tyre if you want to hit the downs harder than the ups, mines seen plenty of action at Lee Quarry and Coed y Brenin...
I will be replacing my front Cinder 2.25 with one before long...
