Forks less good value "these days"

I have read a lot of posts about upgrading forks. I have a pair of Rockshox Dart 2 on my Kona Blast, and have never been particularly impressed with them. There seems to be a fair amount of play in them, and the bump-absorption (particularly on road, over smaller bumps) is nothing short of pathetic. The one plus point would probably be the lockout.

Recently I had a reason to use my ancient old bike (Trek 4300 from circa year 2000) which I had put some lime green Z2 bombers on. I expected to finally see that I was just being fussy and that the Dart 2s were actually good for budget forks - but how wrong I was - the Z2s were supreme. Despite the fact they have never(!) been serviced the ride quality was far superior.

Back to my point: I've read a lot about what forks I should upgrade with, and I have some rough ideas about Tora SLs etc. But the one thing that gets repeated over and over, is that "These days, you don't get so much fork for your money".

Why is this?! What changed, that we now have to pay so much more, for so much less?

I think the opposite - I think forks are exceptional value today. How much was a Z2 new back then? A lot more than a Dart, that is for sure ;-). The Dart is the entry level RS fork, the Tora is better in many ways and will out perform your Bomber.

It is the general nature for parts to improve at a certain price point. But with forks, you are getting ever more and more for less money.
  • I'm relieved to hear a Tora will outperform the bomber.

Must have been me just mis-reading what people were writing!

As it happens, i'll probably change the bike before i change the fork, i've never quite been happy with the geometry.

I remember the days of the Rock Shox Judy and the like in the mid 90's. Think they were 80mm travel, considered plush back then, you couldnt lock them out and they retailed at 500ish quids.
Forks for £150 would now beat them hands down.
