i currently have an FSA double chainset with 39-54t gears, but am struggling with a low enoguh gear on hills so want to upgrade to a 34t-50t compact chainset, i have recently found a shimano fc r700 on ebay, but doesnt appear to include the bottom bracket, could i use my FSA bottom bracket ?

it wont give me as low a ratio ? with my current lowest as 39/26, that will only change to 39/28 rather than 34/26 ?

It depends on which FSA chainset you have. The Gossamer ones use Shimano standard BBs but others don't. Take your current chainset out and measure the diameter of the spindle at both ends where the bearings sit. If both are the same at 24mm then the Shimano chainset will fit straight in. If the non drive side is a little smaller then you will need to change the BB. Alternately just try it in the other way round. If it goes right in then you are OK.
