I've got 12 days before I embark on my LEJOG tour and I'm planning on giving my bike the once over next week. I know a few things that I'm going to do in addition to a thorough wash/degrease/regrease - new chain, new brake pads - but is there anything else I should look at? The only other thing I could think of was the wheel bearings and bottom bracket, but these are fine.

Replace cables if worn and maybe tyres if they're worn

I'd clean and re-grease hubs just in case.

Bottom bracket is usually fine if it's the modern sealed type

Check trueness of rear wheel and tighten spookes if they're loose - especially if carrying loads

Cheers for the tips, especially with regards to the rear wheel - I hadn't thought about that. I'll do it all next Wednesday and take it for a 50ish mile ride on the Friday before getting the coach down to Penzance on the Saturday.

Would definately (assuming cup and cone) strip, clean and inspect the wheel bearings before assembling with fresh grease, also have a good close look at the cassette, new chain for certain, and make sure whatever you do you do at least 50 miles after to make sure you haven't made anything worse!
