Help finding right bike...

I need a bike for a very specific purpose, cycling 12 miles to work on the towpath of a canal. Ideally I'd like a steel frame with a rigid fork, MTB wheels, a relatively high set of flat handlebars and it may as well be singlespeed. Any suggestions?

Depends on your budget I suppose but I started on a Carrera Subway 2 and found it great. As with any bike purchase it all depends on how the bike feels to you (fit,comfort etc.) go and sit on a few at your LBS an get a feel for what you like. I have never owned a singlespeed but there may always be an occasion when you need that lower gear when you wish you had another gear or gears!!!0

Look at Cyclocross bikes!

Budget = £500 - £10000

Cyclecross or traditional steel framed tourers will cope with this fine - I've done hundreds of miles on towpaths and railway paths on mine.
In addition to those suggested check out Thorn bikes from SJS Cycles.Nobody told me we had a communication problem0 -
How about this rather beautiful Genesis Day 01? Steel, knobbly tyres, single speed, £550, looks stunning...

There's a flat bar version as well

I know you said single-speed, but in that price range you could get a hub-gear bike from On-one or Charge. Although the Charge bars might be a little low.0
