I was in the pub this afternoon too in Norwich...people with local accents in Man U shirts with Rooney on the back. I pity them in all honesty.0 -

Remember the old second division? United were in it during the 1974/75 season. In
November 1974, United, who were top, played second placed Sunderland. United won the game
3-2. The attendance that day was 60,585. I was in the Stretford End, near the part that was
uncovered.
Now, imagine a team in the 2nd tier of English football getting 60,000 people watch a home game.
Admittedly, there have been a few "Johnny come latelys" , but the same can be said for, say,
Liverpool, who have lots of fans away from the Merseyside conurbation (just listen to the
606 phone-in on radio five live)
I think a lot of this talk of United not having any fans in Manchester is due to jealousy,
as they have been the stand-out team in England since the early 90s. I grew up in Manchester,
all of my family still live there and are all United fans, even though we were brought up
(all those years ago) on Claremont Road in Moss Side, less than half a mile from City's old ground
(long story,we're talking late 60s, early 70s).
So apart from the recent "Johnny come latelys" don't forget that United have ALWAYS had a huge
fan base in the Manchester area.

Fair play De Sisti, but there is no denying that a rather large proportion of the population support Man Utd and Liverpool for no other reason than they are successful. In Liverpool's case, WERE successful. I meet lots of Liverpool fans in the south, and their only connection with Liverpool is that their ( glory hunting) Dad, Uncle, Brother supported them when they ruled Europe. Suprise, suprise. One of the downsides of success is it attracts JCL and glory hunting bast*rd%.0

Jealousy is not a downside, it's a given.0 -

As someone born on the wrong side of the Pennines to be a Man Utd supporter, I reckon that they've consistently been a great side to watch for positive football. And as I've never paid to watch them, they've given me great value for money
One thing that puzzles me. Ferguson was always old but he no longer seems to be getting older. Where does he get his magic chewing gum?0 -
The situation is far worse in Scotland - Celtic and Rangers each have more "fans" in Dundee than both our local teams put together. It's one of the things that perpetuates the old firm's stranglehold on the scottish game.0
-
Having been to an old firm game i have to say the atmosphere was one of high tension from start to finish before during and after the game.Never trust anyone who says trust me0

As a Luton fan, all the glory supporters we get do my head in.
What's that? Oh.....0
