Crank play?

Hello all, hopefully you can help :?

On my single speed i have an annoying ticking sound coming from the crank/BB area on every revolution, mainly on the downstroke. There's also a bit of play in the cranks which i'm positive is causing it.
As in when i put force on one side of the cranks followed by the other i can feel movement, almost like slipping.

I don't currently have the tools to take the cranks off to investigate, so was wondering if anyone knew the possible cause?

FSA 68mm w/ Forged Chromoly Square Taper BB and FSA vero crankset.

Thanks.

    See the previous post titled "New Bottom Bracket", I had the same problem with my Trek with FSA Vero crank, bottom bracket needed tightening, just been out for a spin and all sorted.

    Thanks Ba, i'm a complete newbie to the BB area (and headsets). Can you tell me what tools i would need?

    A crank puller - will this do? http://www.wiggle.co.uk/park-tools-cotterless-crank-puller/
    I have ultegra 6700 on my other bike, so am i right in thinking this is all i need for that - http://www.wiggle.co.uk/shimano-crank-installation-tool-for-hollowtech-ii/
    What BB tool will i need? Different to ultegra again?

    Thanks.

    Yes, the puller looks right, worth sending them an email to check it fits square taper if you are buying on line. The BB tool is probably this;

    http://www.wiggle.co.uk/shimano-bottom- ... oval-tool/

    It depends on the BB type, if it looks like internal splines with one side of the bearing ( on the drive side) protruding slightly more than the other then this should be the right one. It's worth trying to find one than uses a socket wrench rather than a spanner to drive it though, much less likely to slip off and graze your knuckles. You should use a torque wrench really but you can't really do any damage if you over tighten it.

    Loosen the non drive side (left when sitting on bike) tighten up the drive side so the flange is snug against the bracket and then tighten the non drive side.

    There are lots of videos online if you are unsure.

    Not sure about the tools for ultegra but I think you are right.

    Cheers.
