Sticking shifter

I have a SRAM X-5 9 speed trigger and its sticking.
New derailleur, new gear cable inner and outer and the shifter (when not connected) clicks up and down freely. It only sticks when its on the bike shifting the front derailleur.
Ive pumped some WD40 into it and still no joy. I also disconnected the derailleur and pulled on the gear cable by hand and it stuck, so its got to be the trigger.
Its about twwo years old. Is it just a bad & old shifter {[time for an upgrade?] or is it a common problem?
