Not sure which nuts you are talking about. Pedals are either removed with a specific spanner or with Keo pedals they use a large allen key. If we are talking about the same 'nuts' I believe they are removed in the opposite direction to what you'd expect. I'm sure someone will be a long soon to explain what I mean. :?

Try use allen key instead, and you sure turning correct way? towards the seat (with the allien key at 3 o clock)

So from viewpoint when working on the chainset side, anti clockwise for chainset side. When working on the other side (crank arm only), go anti- clockwise
    Say... That's a nice bike..

Pedals are handed, i.e one side goes one way, t'other goes t'other way

Yep, always turn towards the rear to loosen [from the 12 o clock position as already stated].

I made that mistake a long time ago which resulted in a lot of hassle!

the end of the ordeal, cant for the life in me take the nut out.

so i took it to the local bike shop. they took out the crank, put it on a vice, broke the pedal down to the axial and use a extra long spanner on the axial. problem solved. thank goodness there are still friendly bike shops around.
