Gear Ratio

Newbie question. Just reading a string the Etape Calodonian (sp) and some posters are talking about gear ration, 34x23/42x26. Can somone explain what this means?

    34x23 / 42x26 is gear combination i.e front ring with 34 teeth used with a rear cog with 23 teeth and 43 front ring with rear cog of 26.

    I think it has a compact ie 50/34 - that is the amount of teeth on the two front rings. Im not sure waht the rear has though, i think it may be 12,13,14,15,16,17,19,21,23,25. However im sure you will know for definate once you;ve checked :D
