The Good, the Bad and the Embarrassing

The Good:

When I crashed this morning and wrote off my nice 631 frame, pretty much every single cyclist who passed me on the A40 while I was sitting waiting to be picked up, stopped to check if I was alright, to chat, to sympathise, to see if they could help. This was 13 or 14 separate people. What a great bunch cyclists are.

The Bad:

I crashed this morning and wrote off my nice Reynolds 631 frame.

The embarrassing:

I crashed this morning and wrote off my nice Reynolds 631 frame by cycling straight into the side of a bus shelter.

Okay, the ‘embarrassing’ part probably deserves a bit of explanation:

The cycle path down the A40 narrows where there are bus stops and the path goes round behind them. I had my drink in my hand (doh!). A moment’s inattention, then just as I looked and was about to pass the bus stop, there’s an oncoming cyclist on the narrow bit. It was spectacularly bad timing – the narrow bit must be all of 15 feet long. But there he is. Didn't have time to hit the brakes. A split second subconscious decision and I plough straight into the side of the bus stop rather than into him. Frame bent beyond repair. Neck a bit jarred. Pride severely damaged.

But thanks to the surprising flexibility of those big Perspex adverts on the sides of bus stops, the rest of me is okay.

I suppose if you’re going to crash and write your bike off, it’s better to do something embarrassing like that and walk away, than to go under a bus…

Sympathies abound, but - dare I say it - go on then - that's why I ride in the road.

(A66 and A19 are not quite ones before you comment.)

Good to see your sense of humour still intact especially given the layout of your post.

    :(

Devastating, had it been carbon or aluminium it would have been #### wrote off my £1000 frame.

Time to go looking for a new 631 frame.

And while I think of it, I'd be exactly the same if I destroyed my Dawes Sardar (old type) which is also 631 (I think)

Boll0x to riding a bike on the sections of the A40 that I have to drive on.
