Hello friends,
I'm looking for some advice on buying a pair of MTB Baggies. For years I've just used tesco cheap combat shorts but they last only a few rides before I destroy them so Ive talked my missis into buying me some proper ones for my birthday.
My problem is Im a big bloke, I train for strength in the gym a lot and this has left me with 28 inch quads and a lot of broken chains, mashed bottom brackets, snapped frames etc.

I would like to know if anyone else has big legs and has found a good fitting pair of shorts. I tend to rip the crotch area quite a bit so I think I need the shorts such as the humvees which have a stretchy bit there. Im around a 36 to 38 inch waist.

Cheers
Phill

I don't consider myself to have particularly large quads ( 25 inches give or take) but I have had two pairs of humvees and destroyed them both in a couple of months, both times the crotch split while on a ride and it went downhill from there ,I have repaired both pairs and will think twice about buying another pair. I now stick to Tresspass/tog 24 3/4 lengths or something of that ilk.

Would look at FR/DH baggies if you need some room. Dakine 8 tracks are very generous, long and pretty much indestructable.

I like Sombrio shorts, I've two pairs of Pinners, very tough and baggy. Although the 2011 ones do look minging.

Thanks for the advice guys. Think I'll be going the down hill/free ride short route. The baggie bomb proof side of them is appealing.
Has any one tried the Polaris Descent Shorts or Dakine Chorus or syncline as there all on offer at chain reaction?

Fox Rangers have plenty of room in the leg, and I've had mine for ages... never once had a rip or seem go.

I have this problem massively as well, most cycle specific gear is made for whippets. I've ridden in race face, altura, endure and Polaris shorts, but the best fit I've ever got, by a long way in my Madison tour shorts, they are available from Crc and are great value too! I cannot recommend them enough!

I've had similar problems, think my quads measured 27 inch last time i measured with a 36 inch waist. I never buy cloths online unless i've tried them on in store beforehand, because there likely not to fit.

I managed to pick up a couple of pairs of mountain bike shorts from decathlon that were reduced from £40 to £12 (probably due to being last years range). Came with Padded lycra under shorts, and the XXL baggy shorts fit me fine around the thigh. Waist band could do with being a little smaller for me, but they attach to the inner shorts anyway which hold them in place well enough.

They're also made from two types of material one is stretchy the other not so, although i can't remember exactly where the stretchy material covers, but i suspect it will be the crotch area.

Not sure if there still in stock in stores as this was a couple months ago, but i'm sure there is a replace item for this year with similar design and sizing. Worth checking out if there is a store local to you.
