Blimey, what a silly designregarding the shifter. I know that I can sometimes be quite inept, but it's a bit of a bloody faff to change a simple thing like a cable.
First time with SRAM, if you hadn't guessed, which came with the bike.
Right, I'll go and kick something now.

take cap off put thumb on spring. remove cable.
thread new cable push head home. take thumb off spring. fit cap.

Hi, Nick.
It's the threading the new cable through the shifter, which was a PITA...takes a bit of time...well, it did me. Seems to be a bit of a fine-art.
Apart from that all went well. I managed it in the end, but Shimano is less fiddly.0 -

this is true for changing cables but shimano is more fiddly the rest of the time.0 -
my x7 shifters have a little hole like the shimanos where you just poke the cable through.....
never seen the take cap off thing before....Whenever I see an adult on a bicycle, I believe in the future of the human race.

its one of the differences with x9.
i have a newish x7 with the removable (and much more convenient) plug0 -
Yeah, that's what I was looking for...a plug, but I've since discovered the X9 don't have them, which I find strange.
Anyway, it's done and the new cable and mech are on, so that's one less thing to do.0 -

any sram or shimano can be a pain untill you have done a few and know the right way of doing it.
now Road shifters that is an art.
and then you get someone wanting a mech change coming into the shop 1/2 hour before closing on a friday. and the wire is badly frayed.
He still owes me beer big time."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Sounds like more than one.0 -
I found it fiddly also.. trying to get that cable to go in the hole.. a pair of tweezers helps... the danger is that cable starts to unravel...0

That was the bit that had me declaring, to anyone who'd listen, what a pathetic design it was. :x
I've done plenty of Shimano in the past, so it's probably as Nick says, just a matter of practice and I'll get used to SRAM (still think it's a stupid way of changing a cable though).0 -

I still prefer them to Shimano though, if only for the fact they rarely need barrel adjustment.0
