mp3's on an ipod...

can you just put any old mp3 files onto an ipod or do they have to be itunes???

    They can be any old mp3, but they have to be loaded via iTunes.

    Not correct, you do not have to use iTunes

    I'm aware there are all kinds of "hack" ways of doing this – I didn't know that there were any straightforward applications for normal people. But then, I haven't looked for a while. Which do you recommend?

    You still have to use 3rd party software though. One of the reasons I never bought an iPod is that you can't just drag and drop between folders.

    You miss the point. It's the ability to simply drag and drop between the PC and the Ipod that is the problem. Syncing is a faff. Not an insurmountable one, but a faff nonetheless. When you are familiar with straightforward (and easier) drag and drop, why pay top dollar for a brand identity with restricted functionality.
