Cycling the Austrian Alps...

...some quick questions, are Alpine tunnels lit during the day? Will I need to take lights along with me if I plan a route that goes through some tunnels?

Also, If I decide to avoid tunnels will I still need lights, pedal reflectors, a bell etc? I've been told the Austrians can be a bit anal about that sort of thing.

Ta.

I think lights and a hi-viz jacket are probably always a good idea - even if you just use them to go into town for an evening meal. Tunnels should be lit but they are best avoided and if you can't avoid them you definitely want drivers to know you're there. Bear in mind that in Italy you have to wear a hi-viz gilet in tunnels - Austria may have similar requirements.

It depends what tunnels you are talking about. The shorter tunnels on main roads will be lit and are doable by bike. I would recommend to put a small flashing rear light on for your safety though.
However, there are also quite a few longer tunnels on major through roads (e.g. Felbertauern) that are prohibited for cyclists and without an alternative road so you should research your route well in advance.
