Garmin Connect (web based) and Garmin Training Centre (download to your computer) are both free from Garmin. They are fairly basic programs but work OK.
ridewithgps.com is good, IMO better than Connect but still fairly basic for training analysis. You can download direct from the 500. You can select shorter bits of your ride for closer examination which is better than Connect.
Training Peaks WKO+ and Golden Cheetah seem to be getting good reports and are better for indepth analysis.
I would try Connect first. You can store all your rides there and export them to other programs to see which you like best later. I do this so all my rides are backed up. They all go in rwgps as well.

Check out SportTracks as well you can analyse just about any data downloaded from a Garmin on there, free version is good , paid version, about £22 one off payment even better.0

RubiTrack is great if you use a Mac - way better mapping and presentation than Garmin Connect.0

Is sporttracks ok with the 500's fit files though?0 -
Sport tracks, the best (IMO) piece of software available for analysing data from a GPS device.0
