Bike shop gourged my frame - advice please

AH I love the "my bike is scratched" brigade.0
-
just to add my bike has simular "scratch" mark on frame where BB was installed.,
Il upload picture and you can compare but i think this normal as if threading is simular to what i know with machine work the "bore of cutter" is going to strip away the metal to create the thread in the frame.
This will mean the blade needs to cut a thread into frame and so you useally find that they sratch the metal as the get the depth of thread correct..London2Brighton Challange 100k!

I have no idea if your running an internal or external BB. If the damage doesn't affect the fitting of an internal or external BB I wouldn't be fussed, it's an MTB after all...0
-
I would be fussed
it doesnt matter if its an MTB or not
if it didnt go in with damage it should never have left with damage
if they were incapable of fitting the BB without damaging the frame they shouldnt have taken the work on
if it was seized solid they should have phoned you and explained the situation that it might get marked or show signs of damage when finished if it was such an issue for them,
then its your choice if they do it or not
i would be far from happy and would be taking it further
and by your own admission the managers face said it all so they know they had buggered the job up .0 -
It is not damage, it is a cosmetic mark in a place that cannot be seen that has no effect whatsoever. They have offered to fill it.0
-
i would be bothered if i had found something that actually caused an effect, a few scratches are just exactly that, id be suprised if they werent there in the first place from a dropped chain or summat.
if nything, this is an opportunity to feel relieved that theres nowt too bad happened and i would maybe avoi using the same workshop again.0 -
Sometimes it is impossible to fit a part without causing a mark. Not saying that is the case with this scenario, but even the simple act of tightening bolts can mark paint, or inserting a seatpost can scratch it. Even fitting wheels causes paint to flake. And many of us mark our frames without even realising it anyway.
In this case I would be a little annoyed, and would just leave it at that: but their offer seems reasonable if you want it sorting. I certainly wouldn't be expecting a new frame or for them to fully strip and repaint it!0 -
Moral of the story, for what is effectively a half hour job including tea break, DIY.
Also saves the planet by avoiding the 22 mile trip six times. (Six times, really? For a BB?)I don't do smileys.

As explained, I was gong away to Dalby forest and didnt have the correct tools etc nor the time so thought I'd get them to do it you know- how hard can it be? seems very. The guy didnt struggle to get it out I hung around the shop whilst he did it.
And every time I went back I kept getting told "i can try to do it" by the helpful people there!
And the "clean the chain quote" hadnt had time after the last ride! and everywhere round here is turning to sand at the minute.
Again though, lesson learned, I am now getting suitable tools and will do all my own work again.

Main reson i didnt do work myself was maybe simular to yours, the cost of tools and the reality of not using half of them again once the old BB /parts removed didnt make sense.
Also peace of mind knowing work been done correct helps, and the fact most bike parts like BB and chainsets have a MUST USE TORQUE WRENCH OR YOUR BIKE WILL FAIL marked doesnt inspire a DIY at times if one is honest
But like you said the agro you can get from these jobs it does make you wonder and think again about DIY.
lessons that we learn
1:buy a troque wrench no need for bike shop
2:buy tools that you will use more than once
3:a mark on frame isnt the end of the world, its a mountain bike :roll:London2Brighton Challange 100k!

BB tool and little plastic jobby for the non drive side cost about a tenner, and I've never used a torque wrench on a bike.
Although my centrelock discs use the same tool, so I get double use out of it.
Unless tools are crazy expensive (then I borrow or bodge) I like to buy my own. They will last forever and sooner or later will get used again.I don't do smileys.

Sand and fill = you must be joking
This is Halfords/Boots/GNC/Holland & Barret etc etc etc
This is a company who can afford to do the right thing.0 -
I removed the bottom bracket from a Kona I had a few years ago and most of the edge of paint came off with the threaded end of the bb, looking kind of similar to whe photos shown. Nothing I could do about it, as the paint must stuck to the edge of the bb from when it was built new.
But I wouldnt let halfords loose on anything!2011 Orange 224 evo race

well now i have seen the photos i am not sure i can see any damage but maybe photo resolution not high enough.0

Naah, that's nothing too serious at all. It shouldn't even effect an external BB fitting (as they'll "face" the frame)
TBH put it down to experience and as you said, undertake the maintenance yourself.
My mate recently made a royal, gold plated and jewel encrusted pig's ear of his BB during a DIY [isis] BB replacement. I thin'k he'd pop champagne if the damage was as minimal as yours0 -
