How much steerer length do I need?

Swapping out my forks on to a new MARIN MV frame in a few days ...

Existing frame head tube with forks installed measures 185mm from bottom of head tube to top cap on forks.

New frame head tube measures approx 150mm ...

Is 35mm protruding from top of head tube going to be enough do you think to get stem / top cap on?

    unlikely.

what was the head tube length on the old frame?
    are the headsets the same?
do you want to use the same spaces and stem?

Not measured the head tube length on old frame yet... will do when get home.

Semi Integrated on old frame (Carrera) ... new frame has a Crane Creek S2?

Frame is larger so can loose spacers.

stem stack height is typically 40 mm but some stems can be a little bit shorter; e.g 38 mm for ITM Forged Lite Luxe Road (like what I discovered and needed more spacers).

with that stem it would leave about 3 mm steerer below top which should be ok.

it is recommended 1 or 2 mm max below top so 5 mm would be pushing it but in my opinion, as long as the top stem bolt covers the steerer it will be holding the stem in place so would be ok.

so old frame with spacers and stem and headset used a steerer of 185.

new frame is 150mm then you need a headset what does it take? internal or external?

is the fork even suitable for a Mount Vision?

    what year frame?

Frame is a 2005 Marin Mount Vision and yes it takes a 1 1/8 fork which is what I have (Rockshox Tora RS 318 coil) ... so just need to sort headset out for it.

From the pictures it looks like an internal headset:

    pictures show an External headset

so add 25mm to the 150mm and guess what. new fork time.

Will the frame not take an internal then?

Ah well... guess can keep the HT as it sits and buy new forks for the Marin ... shame as these forks would have been perfect.

if the frame takes external it will not take internal.

and it looks external to me.

Ok thanks ... time to find a fork that will match the rear shock on this bike then!
