I'm looking for a new bike but can't decide whether to buy a mtb or road bike, I equally enjoy both.

Avoid buying a hybrid, they are the worst of both. How about a cyclocross?

    MTB

Then you have the option to ride off road if you want.

I would love one of each but don't have room to keep two. Cyclocross I've tried but it just didn't work for me.

It's either a carbon fibre road bike or a nice hardtail.

Just get a MTB, and have a set of road wheels, works for me.

You lose a bit in acceleration, but gain comfort, steering and good brakes.
Why would I care about 150g of bike weight, I just ate 400g of cookies while reading this?

I should add, I used to have a road bike too, but the MTB was so much more fun on both that i gaveit away.

If I had to have only one bike i'd go for a nice light xc hardtail with travel adjustable forks & lockout, (plus a spare set of disc hubs built onto 700c wheels with slicks for road duties, space permitting) On the positive side - I suppose if you only have one bike, you can justify spending twice as much on it!

i used to think the same and was thinking of selling my road bike. i only bought it in november and had not really used it because of weather, work etc.

then i went for an early morning ride on monday and had a blast :D

i only did about 35 miles but i did enjoy it on the empty B roads

    I'll get my coat

just my opinion but unless you are serious about road riding, and racking up big distances, then get a hardtail mtb instead.

i thought about about buying a road bike, but decided replacing my mtb instead.

why? many mtbers I have dealt with ride both like I do, where as I find the road section the roadies to be more inclined to concentrate more on road cycling world in my experience.

Maybe next time start your own topic about posts you don't like rather than comment on mine.

    Jeez lighten up.

You ask a question in an open forum, you don't get to dictate the answers.

I'm not trying to dictate the answers, but if you don't like my reasonable question then don't bother commenting.

Serious answer: where/what do you ride, budget, weight, preferences.

Otherwise: what a bloody stupid question ;-)

Serious question: if you are serious, give us more info.

I told you them was fightin' words, boy.
  • Never really 'got' road bikes. They dont go anywhere a car can't get too. Whats the point.
Its all seems about being faster and fitter than the next person. Wheres the fun in that.

North Essex based with £1500 to spend, haven't ridden for the last year. Have done both in the past and loved both but started off mtbing first. There are a few nice trails to ride round these parts and then with Thetford further afield and then also the in laws have a lakeland cottage so can always pop up there for a proper mtb fix. But on the other hand there are some lovely roads around these parts to ride.

If I buy a road bike I'm not sure how much I'll use it in the winter period but then if I don't I know I'll miss it in the summer, especially when the "tour" fever sets in. Decisions, decisions............

Where are you in N. Essex? I'm just over near Saffron Walden, or are you more north west essex?

Anyway, tough question, a HT with a set of slicks will work fine for road I guess, pump the pressure up and it will roll fairly well but of course is never going to be a road bike. Stick some knoblies on and then go enjoy off road.

I was in this dilemma but decided on getting a cheap low end road bike to satisfy my speed itches. Both have their places but if I was to get rid of one, It would be the road bike. MTB is far more all round it can do both, I've ridden my roady over a rough public footpath pavement and it felt like it was disintegrating my chap downstairs, not nice.

@ThePriory1978, road riding can be dull when riding alone, but with a group it gets a bit competitve usually, and when you're hitting 35+ mph its a real rush, its chalk and cheese to MTB but its still brilliant fun

  • Have been a road cyclist for 3 years and have 2 road bikes which I used for a daily 25 mile commute. Love it, but part, if not most, of the appeal is the hardship of going as quickly as I can.

A week ago I bought my first mountain type bike - admittedly a top-end Specilaized Epic - but the 3 times I've ridden it I've come back with a huge smile on my face. It is pure enjoyment; the pleasure is not just derived from the pain of the effort, but from the constant changes in terrain and the technical skills required. It has certainly shown up a deficiency in my bike handling skills - even as basic as clipping in/out of the pedals. In road cycling I do this largely in anticipation whereas on trails you can't anticipate all eventualities.

The right answer is to have both road and mtbs, but if I could only have one, the mtb with a spare set of wheels/slicks sounds favourite to me.

The only thing you can do mountain biking on is a mountain bike, unless you are mustard and can hack it on a 'cross bike. A superfast XC hardtail or 29er might be the answer.
