How easy is it to service gears and brakes?

Hello!!

I have a Saracen Vortex LE which has Tektro Auriga Comp hydraulic brakes and Alivio Rapid fire shifters with Deore rear derailleur gears.

It was purchased in 2008 and it has never been serviced or used since Oct 2010. I've been enjoying the hot weather of late but the brakes feel extremely spongy and lack any bite (it's difficult to lock the rear tyres up) and the gears are clunky and catch and generally sound rough.

Now I assume a brake bleeding kit is needed but what do I need for the gears? Is it an easy DIY job for an enthusiastic amateur? Local shops are quoting £50 + VAT to complete both jobs.

Any pointers would be great/
Cheers
Dale

have a read of the info on Parktools and download the Bleed manual from Tektros webby (link in the tech links sticky above).
